The Victoria United Badly Beaten. |
 |
This was a Northern League match, played on Arbroath ground in presence of a fair turnout of spectators. The United were the first to score, which they did from a corner within a minute or two from the start. This was closely followed by a point for Arbroath. Play was fast, and for a time the United had rather the best of it, adding two more points. Arbroath pressed continuously, but the United maintained a capital defence. Marshall, for the Arbroath, scored twice, and the first half ended 3 goals each.
The second half opened with a short spell of open play. Once or twice the United got down to the Arbroath goal, and threatened it, but Mann saved finely. The Arbroath front line settled into a splendid combination, and completely bewildered the United's defence, and the home shooting being accurate goals came rapidly, the period yielding no fewer than 11. Result: Arbroath, 14 goals ; Victoria United, 3.

Keen disappointment vas expressed in all circles at the disastrous defeat of the Victoria United at the hands of Arbroath on Saturday. With a weak team such as did duty at Arbroath, victory over the Maroons was not looked for, but a defeat of such magnitude was not dreamed of, and the wire conveying the dire message came upon the supporters of the club like a thunderclap, and knocked them all of a heap. The Blues held their own manful.y up till half-time, the score standing 3 each, but the defence completely collapsed in the finishing 45 and Cannon was besieged almost continuously, with the dire result above recorded.
