Lochee United scorers: McFarlane, ?

18/11/1899 | KO:

These teams met at Pittodrie and played off their Northern League fixture before a fairly large crowd. Teams: Aberdeen: Bisset; Douglas, Mackie; Cameron, Thomson, Wilson; Livingstone, Gray, Fullerton, Mackay, Shiach. Lochee: Lindsay; Strachan, Taylor; Reid, Robertson, McKinlay; McMahon, McFarlane, Oliphant, Doig, Forrest. Mr Peter Simpson, Aberdeen, was referee. Kicking off, the whites secured a corner, but failed to turn it into account. Presently Livingstone got the ball up to Gray, and the latter smartly sent it into the net. The same trick was tried a second time, but without effect. A third time Livingstone made a fine pass, but Gray was shooting very loosely, and once more he failed to score. Better luck favoured the ground team when Livingstone passed to Fullarton, the latter player getting the ball cleverly into the net.

On resuming after half-time Aberdeen began to press, and Livingstone presently scored the third goal for his side. Up till now the visitors had failed to score, but at this juncture McFarlane came to the rescue and drew first blood for Lochee. Livingstone then got a handy pass from Mackay, and at once sent the leather home. After a spell of end-to-end play, Lochee again rushed up and scored for the second time.

A Northern League match between these teams was played at Pittodrie Park, Aberdeen, before a fair turnout of spectators. In the first half Aberdeen had almost all the play, and scored twice. Lochee pressed hard in the second-half, but, could not send the ball home. The Whites, by good pausing, managed to score other two goals. Lochee were not to be denied, however, and by determined efforts scored twice in succession.

Although Lochee United travelled North with a fairly strong combination, they failed to get the better of Aberdeen at Pittodrie. There was a lack of united play on the part of the visitors, and their defence was rather weak on the whole. Wilson, of the ground team, had to retire before half-time with a bruised foot, but although their opponents were thus a man short during the rest of the game, Lochee were defeated by 4 to 2.
The victory for Aberdeen was mainly due to the brilliant play of Livingstone, who was in capital form. Whenever the ball came his way this player made the very most of his chances, and especially during the second half did excellent service for his side. Had he been better supported by the Aberdeen forwards Lochee's defeat would have been more severe.

Lochee United visited Pittodrie Park on Saturday, in quest of league points, and were defeated by four goals to two. Considering the fine weather, and the fact that there was no other attraction in town, the attendance of spectators was comparatively small, not more than one thousand being present. The poor "gate" was no doubt the inevitable result of the miserable displays given by our local teams this season.
The Aberdeen team underwent a rearrangement, with fairly successful results, their play showing an all-round improvement. Wilson appeared in his proper position at half-back, and before he got hurt was playing a grand game. Milne, of the 'Varsity, was to be given a trial at centre-forward, but he did not put in an appearance. At the commencement the "Whites" went away with a rare bang, and had the ball twice in the net before the game was fifteen minutes old. During the first half both sides had a penalty kick awarded, but from neither did a goal result. In consequence of the injury to Wilson, the Aberdeen had to play most of the time with ten men, but notwithstanding this handicap, they more than held their own. The forwards lost some glorious opportunities to score, Gray being the greatest sinner in this respect.
We would warn Douglas to stop that trick he has of hacking and attempting to trip the man after the ball is away. It cost his side a goal on Saturday. The Lochee have a fine pair of backs, the left being perhaps the best. Their halves were weak, and seemed to tire towards the end of the game. The forwards were all right in the open, but disappointing at close quarters.
Henderson, of the Aberdeen, along with his "better half," watched the game from the stand. The Aberdeen public have apparently come to the conclusion that local football is not worth paying to see, for the crowds who were having a free look from the surrounding high ground were, in the aggregate, as numerous as those within the enclosure.
