HT Score: Dundee Wanderers 1 - 1 The Aberdeen

Northern League
The Aberdeen scorers: Fullerton

30/12/1899 | KO:

These teams met at Dundee in a Northern. League fixture. Mr J. Nicoll, Arbroath, was referee, and the teams were as follows: Aberdeen: Bisset; Douglas, Skene; Cameron, Black, Wilson; Livingston, Mackay, Fullarton, Gray, Shiach. Wanderers: Craig; Robertson, Roberts; Neavie, Gowans, McGhee; McLean, Dorward, Johnston, Graham, McColl. In the first half the Wanderers, played for a short time with only eight men, and, until the full team put in an appearance, were generally in difficulties. Fullarton was the first to score, and at half-time there was one goal to the credit of each team. The homesters had the best of matters in the second half, and when the game ended, the score stood: Wanderers, 5; Aberdeen 1.

Two of the Aberdeen clubs were out in the search of points on Saturday. In one case the result was gratifying, in the other, well, not so.
How did the rumour get about on Saturday night that the Aberdeen had beaten the Wanderers by 5-1? We met one supporter of the "white brigade" and between the festivities of the season and the victory he was much elated. We did not see him after the news of the reverse came out. The attendance at the grounds was poor, but it is generally so in Dundee when Aberdeen clubs perform there. TheDundonian never thought much of the football as played in the far north. The game was commenced with the Wanderers playing 8 men. They had to go for all they were worth until the places were filled. The Aberdeen, who had their full eleven, pressed hard, and for a time had all the play, but they were gradually forced back on their own lines. They were the first to score, however, a beautiful run of Shiach's enabling Fullerton to beat the Wanderers' custodian. A short time after, Douglas, through a piece of mis-play, allowed the Wanderers to draw level. We think Bissett might have saved the shot, but he did'nt, and the first half ended with the score 1-1.

From the plucky way in which the Aberdeen shaped during the first half we looked forward to a good three-quarter's sport. But what a falling off was there. It looked as if the Whites had been wound up for 45 minutes only - and beyond that they would not go. From 1-1 at half-time to 5-1 at the finish is a big drop, but had the Wanderers played more carefully in goal mouth it would have been 10-1.
The Aberdeen were never dangerous, and they only now and then played with any dash. The finish came as a great relief to the Aberdeen. The result further strengthens the Dundee Wanderers' position, as will be seen by the accompanying table.
