In the afternoon, the Aberdeen A team engaged East Fife in a Northern League fixture, in presence of a small gathering of spectators. Mister D. Philip, Dunfermline, lined the teams up as follows:-
Aberdeen A: Mutch; Thompson, Newlands; John Robertson, JJ Simpson, W. Brebner; McLean, James Robertson, McKinley, Ward, Lawrie.
East Fife:Campbell; Middlemass, Henderson; Nairn, Bell, McLean, Marr, Cairns, Stalker, Stewart, Smith.
There was little advantage to either side in the opening passages, both goals being visited in turn, although Campbell had probably more trouble than Mutch. Aberdeen had three new men on trial, and they all acquitted themselves well. Thompson and Newlands proved a pair of stout defenders, the latter is specially being conspicuous for strong and judicious returns early in the game. McLean, at outside right, too, was prominent with several good crosses. The whole of the East Fife men were on an equality so far as merit was concerned, but their attacks were lacking in combination, and easily broken up by the local halves. The game had only gone about 15 minutes when McKinley got the first goal for Aberdeen, and this proved to be the only points scored in this half.
Play had not long resumed when Henderson was penalised for handling the sphere within the line, and the inevitable free kick was driven straight into the net by McKinley. The Fifers play did not improve with this reverse, and Henderson almost gave away another penalty, but he brought the local pivot down just outside the area. The free kick landed the ball just in front of Campbell's charge, and a smart bit of head-work by James Robertson guided the sphere into the net. Some faster play was seen subsequent to this, and the Fife men showed some strong work, but Newlands appeared to be everywhere, and the invasions were promptly turned. McKinley was in goal-getting mood, and he added a fourth point for Aberdeen, after forcing a passage through the defence, and driving past the keeper.
