The Aberdeen Under-18s are maintaining their strong challenge in the new Youth League. Heading the nine-team league table, the Dons' colts extended their unbeaten sequence to seven games and brought their points tally to 17 (a win earns three points in this event) when they scored a 9-0 victory over Morton at Cappielow Park last week.

Prior to that heavy defeat, the Morton youths figured among the leading contenders with three wins in their first four fixtures, but, against Aberdeen, the Greenock side were Handicapped by having a player sent off for a second bookable offence just before the interval. That apart, it was a very workmanlike performance by the Aberdeen youngsters. Coach Neil Cooper was particularly pleased with their passing fluency and the professional attitude with which they approached what proved an easy victory pressing home their superiority.
Missing from the Aberdeen line-up at Cappielow was a regular right back Greig McCulloch, with a nose infection, but Craig Ireland returned to central defence after missing several games through injury.
In general, however, the visiting defence was rarely put under pressure, the trend of the game being towards the Morton end, with goals coming at regular intervals. Goals from David Rowson, Ireland and Elliot Smith gave Aberdeen a commanding interval lead, while the second half saw Malcolm Kpedekpo and Dennis Wyness (a 32nd minute substitute for Stuart Wilson, who took a head knock) claim two goals each, with Stephen Glass and second substitute Tommy Corkan supplying the remaining counters.
