After big wins against Dundee and Hamilton, United have registered three successive 2-2 draws so a tight encounter was on the cards as the sides locked horns in St Andrews.
Seb Ross made a rare Reserve team as he came back from an injury which has restricted his loan appearances at Stenhousemuir.
The opening play was a little scrappy as both sides looked to settle but a Lewis Duncan cross flashed across the face of the United goal with no Dons attacker able to apply the finishing touch.
Aberdeen suffered a blow when Miko Virtanen limped off after only 14 minutes having taken a knock, Max Barry coming on to replace the Finn who has been in fine form in recent weeks.
Neither team was able to stamp its authority on the game and the opening quarter passed without either creating an opportunity.
Just before the half hour mark a fine ball from Barron sent Ethan Ross racing in on goal but his shot was always rising and didn't force a save from the United keeper. United came close a minute later when a cross from the right picked out Glass but the midfielder's header flew wide.
The home side again threatened on 38 minutes when a forcing run by Inglis created an opening for Chalmers, but the shot was hurried and went well over the bar.
Smith tested Archie Mair from distance, but the half ended with the match goal-less after a disappointing opening forty-five with good football at a premium.

Ethan Ross tried his luck from a twenty-yard free-kick, but keeper Currid tipped his curling effort over the top for a fruitless corner. However, the youngster was in raptures on 48 minutes when he raced into the box and beat a couple of defenders before slamming the ball into the net. Another fine goal from Ethan who is enjoying a great campaign.
Davidson fired over after a United corner but the Dons, playing downhill and with the biting wind behind them, were beginning to take control of the game. Dangana's header from a Duncan corner forced a fine save from Currid but, again, the corner came to nothing.
Seb Ross was replaced by Kieran Shanks on 62 minutes and the sub was quickly into the action nearly creating a chance for Dangana.
With ten minutes left, Barron and Duncan came off to be replaced by Hanratty and Chesser. A minute later Jack Mackenzie was cautioned for kicking the ball away after being penalised.
Shanks came close to grabbing a second for the Dons, but his powerful effort was always missing the target. Another dancing run from Ethan Ross should have seen him score his second goal but he fired wildly over after doing all the hard work to engineer the chance.
United piled forward in search of an equaliser and got their reward when Chalmers rifled a shot beyond Mair. The goal-scorer turned sinner a minute later as he was red-carded for an elbow on Jack Mackenzie.
There were also late bookings for United's Zata and Thomas as tempers threatened to boil over but the final whistle blew with honours even.
