Div 1 (Old)

09/02/1929 | KO:

Weakness in Defence Costs Aberdeen Points.

ABERDEEN LOSE POINTS IN GLASGOW.

Clyde a Poor Team.

Seven thousand spectators saw Clyde defeat Aberdeen by two goals to one, at Shawfield. The Aberdeen team gave a poor display, and the form they showed does not seem to enhance their chances aganst Falkirk at Brockville next Saturday.
Aberdeen started in promising fashion and played well for a time, but for the remainder of the game played poor football. Clyde, who were in grave danger of relegation, are a poor team, but the form of the Pittodrie side was even poorer on Saturday.
Both Jackson and Livingstone were slightly at fault when the Clyde goals were scored. Black was the only half-back to play to form, and of feeble attack, Yorston and McDermid were best.
The display of the home team corresponded with their lowly position on the League chart. Their defence was sound, but their attack was weak.
The inclusion of Tim Williamson at inside right, in no way strengthened the front line. Williamson who was signed on Friday night, played a serviceable game, but was not outstanding.

The Run of Play.

The game opened in sensational fashion, Yorston gathering an up the centre pass by Black, to give Aberdeen the lead in the first minute. Fraser was in action a minute later to a good effort by Cheyne. Play swung to the other end where Yuill fisted away a centre from Jessiman, and pushed a drive by Dougal against the cross bar. Aberdeen resumed the offensive and after Fraser had saved from Yorston, Cheyne sent past. The visitors kept up the pressure, and Yorston and McLeod both had good tries. Clyde raided the Aberdeen goal and after Summers had shot over, Yuill held a hard drive by Jessiman. McKenzie had a run on the Aberdeen left and from his centre, Yorston missed narrowly with a snap-shot.

Clyde Equalise.

Twenty minutes after the start, Knox put the Shawfield team on level terms. Clyde then took up the role of aggressors, and Dougall missed narrowly, while Yuill saved from Summers. From a corner by Jessiman, Jackson netted, but the goal was disallowed for "hands."

Another for Clyde.

Aberdeen were kept mainly on the defensive, and forty-five minutes after the start the home team took the lead. Yuill could only palm out a shot by Knox, and Jackson fastened on to score.
Immediately on the resumption, Aberdeen broke away, and Cheyne got through to miss narrowly. The visitors flattered only to deceive, however, and were soon on the defensive. Yuill was lucky to retain possession of a tricky shot by Jessiman, and a minute later the Aberdeen custodian made a splendid save from Gibson. In an Aberdeen raid Yorston was robbed in the act of shooting, and then Fraser clutched a long shot from Cheyne.

Clyde Press Strongly.

Clyde attacked with renewed vigour, and Yuill fisted clear a shot by Jackson at the expense of a fruitless corner. Shortly afterwards, the Aberdeen 'keeper held a header from Jessiman, and a shot by Dougall scraped the crossbar. Aberdeen rallied, but Cheyne shot wide. McKenzie forced a corner, from which Fraser fisted clear. Yuill was kept busy after this, and twice saved from Dougall. Towards the end Aberdeen, led by McDermid, made a last desperate effort to get on Ievel terms, but the defence held.
