Match Report From East End Park

A game that promised so much ultimately delivered very little today at East End Park. The home side dominated the first half, but couldn't find a way past Peter Kjaer who steadied a nervous looking defence. The second half saw the Dons come more into the game, but once more neither team looked like breaking the deadlock. With Livingston suffering a heavy defeat at Parkhead this was probably a better result for the Dons than it was for the Pars. Peter Kjaer was forced to leave the field in the second half after picking up a couple of heavy knocks.

The home side started the match much better than the Dons and they created the first chance of the match in the 3rd minute when Crawford made space on the left before setting up N'Diaye. Fortunately the Dons were able to clear, but two minutes later N'Diaye went close again before Kjaer rushed out to smother. The keeper was injured in the challenge and needed lengthy treatment. The Dons had to wait until the 11th minute before creating their first half chance, which came from a weak header by Derek Young. A minute later Mackie tried to take advantage of a clearance held up in the wind. Unfortunately his lob was well off target.

The Dons fans were thankful that Kjaer had managed to play on when he was down quickly to hold a low drive from Crawford. A minute later McGuire was caught in possession by N'Diaye who in turn set up Crawford. Luck was with the visitors though as the Scotland International drove wide. McNaughton showed his International quality in the 22nd minute when he went on a strong run and delivered a perfect pass to Derek Young. Dunfermline eventually steered the ball back to keeper Ruitenbeek. Two minutes later Kjaer was in action again as he came off his line to deny Skinner who had carved open the Dons defence with a one-two with Bullen. The home side should have gone ahead in the 26th minute but a combination of Bisconti and Kjaer denied Crawford with the Dons defence at sixes and sevens.

The Dons finally got forward in the 35th minute, but could only offer a 35-yard speculative shot from McNaughton which did little to concern the keeper. Two minutes later Kjaer rescued the Dons again as he saved a Skerla effort on the line following a corner kick. The Dons had a couple of half chances before the break. Firstly Mike released Young wide on the right, but the striker delayed and was eventually forced wide. In the final minute Winters hit a fierce drive which was blocked by the Pars defence.

The Dons made a brighter start to the second half and in the opening minute McNaughton delivered a dangerous cross, which was flicked, clear as Winters looked set to pounce. The resultant corner gave the Dons their best chance of the game. After initially clearing Mike returned the ball and Mackie headed inches wide with the keeper beaten. The 51st minute saw Tiernan fire wide after collecting a cushioned header on the edge of the box. Two minutes later McAllister delivered a dangerous cross and once more a defender made a last minute challenge as Mike looked set to score.

Dunfermline weathered this early storm and they went close themselves on the hour mark when Crawford went on a penetrating run and hit the side netting. The game then lost a lot of it's shape and became littered with errors. Kjaer was eventually forced to leave the field in the 74th minute following a second hefty challenge. It finally burst into life again in the closing minutes with both sides having chances to win it. Thomson should have scored in the 88th minute, but sliced his shot from six yards out. Then in injury time both Mackie and Thornley had shots blocked. To be fair it would have been a bit of a steal if the Dons had grabbed all three points at this stage.
