Second half double breaks Hearts

Despite soaking up most of the pressure Aberdeen recorded a 2-0 win at Tynecastle today for caretaker manager Paul Hegarty. Paul Bernard returned to action after a 13-month layoff and scored the opening goal and set up the second for Dennis Wyness. This was only the eighth win of the campaign and was one of the few high spots in what had been a disappointing season.

Coming off the back of a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Dundee United the Dons were determined to keep it tight at the back. The home side started strongly with Aberdeen having to defend stoutly in the first half. Cameron went close to opening the scoring with a near post header before Jim Hamilton headed wide. Aberdeen created the best chance of the first however with a great move late on. Smith split the Hearts defence with a telling pass that found Dow wide on the left. He swung over a cross and Jess steered a shot inches over the bar.

Eight minutes after the break Aberdeen took the lead from a corner kick. Jess played it short to Young and after receiving the ball back he swung in a cross that was glanced past the keeper by Bernard. The Dons second came from some lovely passing play in the 71st minute. One touch stuff between Jess and Bernard set up Dennis Wyness who made no mistake as he drilled the ball past McKenzie.

Hearts, under the guidance of Jim Jeffries, then stormed forward to try and retrieve the match. Pressley hit a fierce shot from 25 yards that went inches over the bar before Derek Stillie pulled off a series of saves. He first made a fine stop from substitute Guerin in open play then denied the same player from a free kick 20 yards out. In the closing minute he also blocked an effort from Kirk to maintain his clean sheet and ensure the win.
