Dons earn deserved draw

Aberdeen fought back this evening for a well earned draw against Celtic reserves. All eyes were on Celtic's new Chinese signing, Du Wei but he was unable to prevent the Dons grabbing a deserved point. Celtic took the lead after 23 minutes through Gardyne and probably played the better football with a strong side on display. Aberdeen showed great determination and levelled five minutes from time when Maguire took advantage of some indecision. MacAuley had a great game for the Dons and Winter looked impressive in the unusual sweeper role that he played.

Aberdeen started the match well and Dempsey won a free kick in the 3rd minute. The set play was wasted, but five minutes later Kiely headed a Muirhead cross wide of the target then the striker went close again in the 10th minute after a mistake from Du Wei. Celtic lost cheap possession again a minute later and once again Kiely failed to hit the target. Celtic slowly eased themselves into the match and Wallace started causing problems for the Aberdeen defence.

Kelly cut out a cross from Wallace in the 12th minute then a minute later Wallace again provided the cross as Celtic hit the woodwork before Considine scrambled the ball clear. McGeady then threatened for the visitors in the 15th minute but found no takers for his cross Then three minutes later he picked out Varga but the defender headed wide. Celtic took the lead in the 23rd minute when a long ball through the middle found Gardyne. The Celtic man turned Considine and slipped the ball past the helpless Kelly.

Aberdeen tried to hit back and Dempsey hit a 25-yard volley over the bar in the 25th minute then combined well with Kiely ten minutes later but screwed his effort wide. Kelly produced a fine save in the 39th minute then in the final minute of the half a dangerous corner from Muirhead was scrambled clear.

Celtic forced two early corners after the interval forcing Kelly to touch the ball on to the bar with the second effort. On 52 minutes MacAuley looked too be heading for goal when the referee pulled play back for an alleged foul. Two minutes later Wallace shot over following a good run on the left. Then on the hour mark Virgo met a cross from the left but he pulled his shot wide as Celtic looked to put the match out of reach. Kelly came to the rescue a minute later as he pulled off a magnificent save from McGeady.

The keeper was in action again in the 67th minute to make a good stop from Pearson. Bagshaw replaced McInnes in the 70th minute and three minutes later he carved out a chance that was cleared by Du Wei at the back post. In the 80th minute Kelly made another fine save from Agathe but Aberdeen then grabbed a deserved equaliser five minutes from time. The Celtic defence didn't deal with a long ball from Muirhead and Maguire nipped in to beat the keeper from an acute angle. In the final minute Maguire and Dempsey linked well and the goal scorer was inches from producing a winner as his shot slipped past the post.
