Low Scores a 'Van Basten' as Dons Win

Elgin City 4 Aberdeen XI 5  Sunday 26 July 2.00pm kick off

McRobbie 14, Crawford 50, Megginson 52, Low 54, 84

An Aberdeen XI this afternoon beat Third Division Elgin City 5-4 in a very entertaining match at Borough Briggs with Nicky Low scoring two stunning goals.

The Dons side, mainly made up of U19 players plus Crawford, Holm and Stewart, went ahead on 14 minutes when Megginson had a good run down the right. His cross found McRobbie who beat a defender and cracked a low shot into the net. In an even first half the home side equalised through McLeod on 40 minutes.

Neil Cooper was not overly happy with his player's efforts during the first period and had a few words at half time.

Whatever he said did the trick!

The Dons scored three quick goals at the start of the second half.

Jonathan Crawford made it two from a Low corner on 50 minutes, then two minutes later Megginson slid in to convert a Gibson cross from the left to make it 3-1 and then two minutes after that Nicky Low scored to first of his two goals.

The midfielder picked up a loose ball and from about 32 yards out hit a sublime chip over the keeper. Elgin pulled one back to make it 4-2 but with 6 minutes remaining Low scored an even better goal. From about 16 yards out he hit an incredible volley into the net. It was like the famous goal Marco Van Basten scored against the USSR in the Euorpean Championship finals in 1988.

Elgin pulled two late goals back through Inglis (85) and Jack (89) but Aberdeen held on for another pre-season victory.
