Brilliant Goalkeeping
Bad finishing was not entirely responsible for Aberdeen's lack of success. An important factor was the brilliant goalkeeping of Brownlie, who time and again brought off the seemingly impossible. Fleming (East Fife), who led the home attack, showed himself a bustling type of leader with some clever touches. Donaldson, in the second half especially, touched something like his best form. McCall was a mixture of brilliance and mediocrity. He and Donaldson shared the goals. Bain had a poor game, and Smith was not so effective on the left wing as he is at half-back. Cooper was the best back afield, and Dyer, usually seen on the left wing, did not do badly as a left back. Lyon had his hands full with Juliesson, the Dundee United centre-forward. While Brownlie was the Dundee United team?s hero in defence, Reid, at centre-half, also put u a courageous fight.
The Goals
Aberdeen opened the scoring in ten minutes, when McCall smartly lobbed a free kick from Lyon over the keeper into the net. Five minutes later Donaldson broke through from a pass by Bain, and although hampered by Lewis found the net. A mix-up between Lyon and Cooper led to Juliussen reducing the leeway. Before the interval McCall failed to convert a penalty. Donaldson and McCall scored good goals for Aberdeen in the closing stages and Juliessen got through to net for the visitors.
