HALF-BACKS FAIL
It is not a difficult task to pick out the best players on Saturday. Johnstone in goal was all right, and Cooper played well until he became involved in a spot of bother with Philp. The half-backs were a failure, and the best of the forwards was Beattie. The big centre-forward was a trier all through but got little suppost. St Bernards had a do-or-die defence, in which Wallace, Abbie and Philp were outstanding. The forwards were erratic, but their enthusiasm and dash made them dangerous. Hay, Linton and Theurer were best. The teams were level with one goal each at the interval. Saints were lucky to take the lead in fourteen minutes, when a shot by Philp was deflected into the net by a defender. The equaliser came immediately, Beattie cleverly beating Yorke to slip the ball past the keeper.FIRST-TIMER
Seven minutes after the start of the second half Theurer restored the visitors' lead when he met a cross from Linton first time. A few minutes later the teams were again on an equal footing. Wallace could only push out a shot from Williams and Taylor netted. Hay put the Saints ahead when he fastened onto a poor clearance by Dunlop. Twelve minutes from the end Taylor was brought down in the penalty area and Beattie converted the spot kick.Source: Press & Journal, 20th November 1939
