The county champions of Forfar and Aberdeen met at Dens Park on Saturday in the first round of the tournament for the handsome shield presented by Messrs John Dewar and Co., Ltd. Under the supervision of Mr. McArthur, Stirling, the teams lined up as follows:-
Dundee A: Riley; Darroch, Mackenzie; Taylor, Fenton, Potter; McHardy, Brand, Kerr, Smith, Findlay.
Aberdeen A: Barrett; Willox, Brebner; Low, Thompson, Robertson; Knowles, Cruikshank, McNicol, Smith, Jaffrey.
At the outset the Dundee forwards got down, and after some minutes play raged in the Aberdeen Territory. The visitors' right wing was not long in taking matters in hand, and the home backs pretend some clever play, Darroch the specially being prominent. But after about 10 minutes' play and D opened the scoring, McHardy catching up a ball from Kerr and driving it past Barrett. A minute later the Granite City custodian found himself again beaten. Willox, the right back, missed his kick, and Kerr, rushing in, deftly lifted the ball past Barrett. After some pretty play, in which the Granite City forward line pressed hard, Darroch in attempting to clear, handled the ball within the penalty area, and McNicol who took the kick, beat Riley.
Aberdeen were hard pressed in the second half, but the defence was sound. There was no further scoring, the game ending:- Dundee 2, Aberdeen 1.
