St Johnstone opened the football season at Perth on Saturday against Aberdeen, before a fairly large crowd. Teams:-
St. Johnstone: Graham; Harvey, Turner; Mackay, Sampson, Fleming; Lumsden, McDonald, Bain; McCulloch, Hynd.
Aberdeen: Lickley; Willox, Brebner; Davidson, J. Simpson, J. Robertson; Robertson, Lawrie, McKinley, Hilton, R. Simpson.
Referee - Mr. D. Philip, Dunfermline.
The first half was rather hotly contested. A fine punt by Turner let the home team's left wing away, but Hynd was forced to play the ball out just at the corner flag, and the Saints' defence was kept busy for a time. Although doing less attacking work, the Saints were the first to score. A fine combined push by the home forwards resulted in a corner. Hynd sent in a fine corner kick, and Lumsden headed neatly into the net. The Saints were no allowed to keep the lead for long. The visitors renewed their strong pressure, and McKinley, seizing a fine opportunity, drove the ball hard into the net.Once on the run St. Johnstone were a dangerous lot, and the result of another attack by the home tea, was that they were again up. Bain, from close quarters, rushed the ball past McKinley.
A persistent attack in the second half enabled the visitors to equalise again, and then Lumsden put on a third point for the Saints.
The gate amounted to £15.
