Aberdeen 1 - 1 Dundee Wanderers

Northern League
Aberdeen scorers: Smith.
Dundee Wanderers scorers: Fenton

13/01/1906 | KO: 14:30

Slovenly Play at Pittodrie.

Why Aberdeen A did not score more than on goal in the first half is a question to he answered by the forwards. Chances galore came their way, but the goalposts were too narrow or too low, while, with the exception of Smith's goal, nobody could put a line ball through. Harvey's absence told on the right wing but it ought not to have had such a had effect on the others.
The Wanderers fought gamely and deserved the point for their pertinacity if for nothing else. What they lacked in science was made up for by the resolute way they cleared and rushed down the field. There are many worse teams than the Wanderers in the League, and the wonder is how they are so far down in the League List. Unless the A's improve on Saturday's display they have about as good a chance of the flag as they have of reaching the North Pole.
Tait was not a success in goal. Neither was Sam Wilcox at back, who was beaten rather easily on several occasions. Ward, Hamilton, and Cruickshank were very poor. In fact these three will have to wake up considerably if they wish to keep their places in the team. All over it was a poor game to witness on a cold day.

The return Northern League match fixture between Aberdeen A and Dundee Wanderers was played at Pittodrie in fine weather, but before a moderate attendance of spectators. The teams were:-
Wanderers: Craig; Kingsland, Miller; Macfarlane, Fenton, Boyd; Jack, Lavery, Fairweather, Smith, Sturrock.
Aberdeen A: Tait; Willox, Brebner; Davidson, Thompson, Robertson; Smith, Cruikshank, Hamilton, ward, Hilton.
Referee - J. Nicoll, Arbroath.

For the greater part of the first half the Aberdeen players had the best of the game, and 5 minutes from the start the Wanderers were a goal down, Smith, and the outside left taking full advantage of a cross from the right, and giving Craig no chance with a fast shot close in. The Wanderers' defence was the strong point in their team, and the goalkeeper and right back where repeatedly in evidence. The Wanderers' right wing tried hard to break through, but the Robertson and Brebner were rarely at fault. Hamilton and Hilton were prominent among the forwards, and one effort by Ward was deserving of our goal. Only once did the Wanderers look like scoring, but Tait rushed out and saved finely from the left.

The Dundee players had more of the game on crossing over. Their forwards were weak in front of goal, however, and failed to improve on their midfield play. Success, however, ultimately came their way, and the equalising goal was fully deserved. For a time they completely hemmed in their opponents. One shot struck the goalpost, and then, from a finely-placed a corner, Fenton headed through. The centre-half up to this stage had been one of the best men on the field. Aberdeen pressed strongly two wards the end of the game, and would have scored but for the brilliant goal keeping of Craig, backed up by Kirkland. No further scoring took place, and the game ended Aberdeen A, 1 goal, Dundee Wanderers 1.
