HT Score: Montrose 2 - 2 Aberdeen

Northern League
Montrose scorers: Matthew, Duncan, Matthew
Aberdeen scorers: Hilton, Ward, Hamilton.

23/12/1905 | KO:

Aberdeen A visited Montrose and played a return Northern League match. The teams were:-
Montrose: Paterson; McKenzie, Rattray; Gowans, Coollie, Campbell; Matthew, Duncan, Robertson, Grahame, McLachlan.
Aberdeen A: Barrett; Murray, Willox; Davidson, Thompson, Brebner; Ward, Hilton, Hamilton, Smith, Jaffrey.

From the kick-off Montrose invaded. Aberdeen drove them off, and Smith tested Paterson. At the other end Duncan played to Matthew, who kicked over. Aberdeen A tried to rush matters, and Hamilton drove past. Campbell was cheered for stopping Hamilton on a likely run. Montrose cleared their lines, and Matthew let Duncan away, who shot over. Immediately after Murray missed his kick, and Matthew found the net with a hard drive. Aberdeen resumed with vigour, but Ward shot past. Robertson placed splendidly to McLachhlan, the left winger failing to catch on. Paterson was loudly applauded for a save on the line from Smith, and Montrose again returned. Shortly after Campbell had to leave the field, after a collision. Playing with ten men, Montrose continued to press, and Duncan headed through a good goal, against which the Aberdonians protested. A mistake by Coull a minute later led to the A team reducing the leeway, Hilton netting. Hilton then went off, but he and Campbell returned. Aberdeen then made a great effort to equalise, and another miss by Coull lead to Ward finding the net with a simple shot.

The teams, without leaving the field, resumed, and from the kick-off Montrose pressed, and Robertson had a good effort. Jaffrey got away on the left, and forced Coull to concede a fruitless corner. Duncan led Matthew away, but Willox fouled close in. Matthew took the kick, and Duncan struck the cross-bar with a rare header. Barrett had plenty to do, and saved several splendid shots. Montrose again took the lead. McLachlan shot in, and Barrett fumbling, Matthew netted. At the other end an exciting episode occurred, Paterson clearing, but the ball lay on the goal line, with a bunch of Aberdonians round it, Rattray saving in the nick of time. Aberdeen were fast and eager, and when they got going they took some stopping, and with Campbell off they were dangerous. Campbell's reappearance was hailed with cheers, and in a minute Aberdeen equalised, the home defence being slack. Hilton played beautifully to Hamilton, who headed through. Both teams went at it hard to get the lead, and Montrose were having most of the play. Seven minutes from time excitement rose, when Montrose forced a corner, which was splendidly centred, but the Aberdeen cleared their lines. Aberdeen's backs were playing their game, and cleared on many occasions. Close on time the visitors forced two corners in succession, but both proved to no avail, and a very hard game ended with the score:-Montrose, 3; Aberdeen A, 3.
