04/01/1909 | KO:

This friendly fixture was played at Pittodrie, Aberdeen, yesterday afternoon. The teams were mostly composed of local juniors. There was a fair attendance of spectators. Teams:-

Aberdeen A: J. Macpherson; Hannah, W. Green; McGunn, J. S. Simpson, D. Forsyth; Hay, McConnachie, Towns, Ritchie, Neilson.
Maryhill: Nelson; Potts, Brodie; Wilson, McDonald, Weir; Douglas, McAuley, Haddo, Millar, Watson.

Maryhill attacked from the kick-off. They made progress on the right, but the local defence was sound, and gave nothing away. Aberdeen then attacked, and forced a fruitless corner. Play was very interesting. The visitors played a fine combination game, but their movements were too close to prove effective. Play was mostly confined to Aberdeen's half. Capital play by the visitors' halves kept the local forwards well in check. A great shot by Weir was well held by Macpherson. The visitors had most of the play, but their movements were too close, the local halves and backs taking up all combination. Aberdeen pressed on the left, but the attack was only momentary. The visitors were awarded a penalty. Macpherson, in clearing a cute cross by Douglas, left his goal. He cleared weakly, and Millar sent in a swift shot. Hannah, who had taken the goalkeepers place, saved with his hands. McAulay scored from the resulting penalty. Maryhill played with much vigour. Macpherson saved numerous shots. Green gave away a corner, I and, after much difficulty, the local defence got the ball away. Aberdeen pressed in the closing stages of the period, but without result.

Maryhill attacked on resuming, and Watson sent over twice in succession. Aberdeen retaliated briskly, but the attack was not sustained. The locals put much vigour into their play, but they could make no impression on the opposing defence. Maryhill forced two fruitless corners in succession. Aberdeen were outplayed. The Maryhill halves were in excellent form. Their placing and tackling were a treat, and it was only now and again that the locals got away. Aberdeen's backs were sound. Macpherson had a great shot from Douglas to deal with. The goalkeeper brought off a grand save. Aberdeen then attacked, and the Maryhill goal on two occasions narrowly escape. Play was fast and furious, and ranged from end to end, several exciting scrimmages taking place in front of both goals. Aberdeen fought hard for the equaliser, but without success.
