THE GAME
Motherwell kicked off, but Aberdeen had the first innings. The right winger Harley gained a corner, which was cleared. Following good work by Main, Clark brought King to his knees with a fine low drive, and then Watson narrowly missed. Aberdeen, so far, could make no impression on the Motherwell defence, in which McNeil was prominent. Nielsen had the first real dried, and after slipping Sneddon, he volleyed at express speed, just missing by inches. Aberdeen were having to defend more than was so of their liking, Neilson being there only forward to cause trouble. As the game progressed, however, Aberdeen showed signs of improvement, and Mitchell had twice to handle. Motherwell again pressed, and following some good forward play Main sent in a brilliant shot, which skimmed the crossbar. Then the Aberdonians came away in a body, and gained a corner. Neilson placed to perfection, but the Motherwell defence prevailed. Nearing half-time, Motherwell pressed to some purpose, and only the fine play of King, Hannah, and Harper kept the home team from scoring. Any danger that came from Aberdeen was from the left wing, and had Neilson been off their placed, Aberdeen's chances would have been improved. Main was clean through for Motherwell, and King saved by leaving his charge. Half-time was called without any scoring, the game being all in favour of the homesters. Motherwell resumed with 10 men, their centre being injured just before half-time. The first incident of note was a grand run by Rae, who finished by flashing right across the goal. Watson reappeared for Motherwell. From a corner King brought off a miraculous save. Aberdeen got off, and McNeill stopped a ball as it was going into the net after Mitchell was beaten. A penalty was awarded, and Mitchell saved from Douglas, who put over the bar from the rebound. Motherwell were soon at the other end after this let-off, and only King's brilliance prevented a score. Aberdeen gained a corner, which was disposed of, and again Motherwell took the game in hand, and King saved brilliantly from Rae. After having the worst of the game, Aberdeen scored through Dickson.Source: Aberdeen Daily Journal, 4th December 1911
