Aberdeen Reserves defeated Peterhead Saturday at Pittodrie Park, Aberdeen, by four goals to one in the first of a series of home-and-home finals in the Aberdeenshire Cup competition, and the score in no way flatters the victors. But for the brilliance of Greig in goal Aberdeen would have won by a bigger margin.
Aberdeen jumped into the lead at the start, Doolan, the centre forward scoring with a fierce shot. It was after this early reverse that Peterhead were seen to best advantage, and Burge equalised from a corner near the interval. Right from the re-start of activities Doolan again put his team in the lead with the best goal of the match. The centre forward accepted a pass from the left, and he volleyed the ball into the net close under the crossbar.
The second half developed into a duel between the Aberdeen attack and the Peterhead defence. It was only on rare occasions that Peterhead went over the half-way line, and the Peterheadians owe much to their goalkeeper for keeping the scoring down. The Aberdeen forwards simply rained shots on the Peterhead citadel, but Greig defied all efforts excepting a 20-yard drive by McLeod, and a ball from Doolan close in.
The Aberdeen defence were never seriously tested, and their attack worked harmoniously. Doolan was a thrustful leader, and his shooting was a feature of the game. He was well supported by his colleagues in the front rank.
On the Peterhead side Birnie often took the eye with his fine tackling and forcing tactics. The forwards will have to combine better if they are to make any impression on the Aberdeen defence in the return match at Peterhead.
