Aberdeen 'A' Win At Ayr

It would not have been surprising had Aberdeen "A" gone under at Ayr, for the United reserves have had quite a good season and have in the past proved very difficult to beat on their own soil. Aberdeen's second team, which was of course, strengthened by the inclusion of a number of first team men, rose nobly to the occasion, and won handsomely and deservedly in the end.
Once again McFarlane made his presence felt by scoring two of the three goals, Smith having the other. McFarlane has been scoring steadily all season, and is the leading scorer on the Aberdeen club's books. He has undoubtedly helped considerably to place Aberdeen A at the top of the Alliance. In fact, there are many people who think that he should have been played more often as leader of the first team attack.
Before they can be declared winners of the Alliance, however, Aberdeen A have a very testing fixture list to go through. They still have about seven matches to play, their away games including visits to Paisley, Tynecastle and Motherwell. If they take three points from their away fixtures, the Alliance championship will be ended at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen "A" further strengthened their position as Alliance League leaders by defeating Ayr United at Ayr by three goals to nil. The game had only been in progress five minutes when clever work by McFarlane resulted in the centre forward scoring. Smart Play by the Aberdeen halves gave the Ayr attack little scope. McCormack on the left got through but McSevich saved. A corner forced by Love resulted in McFarlane counting a second time after Gallagher had saved. Shortly afterwards Smith got through on his own to add a third goal. On the resumption Ayr attacked and after McCosh had hit the crossbar McSevich saved from McCormack. The Aberdeen defence gave a sound display, Cooper being especially prominent. Close to the finish Ayr were awarded a penalty, but McCall failed with the kick.
