The Dons got off to a great start when Tiernan scored after Celtic keeper Morrison fumbled a Robert Duncan corner in the second minute. Celtic then came into the game and it took several good saves from Peat to keep the Dons lead intact as the Parkhead side pushed for an equaliser. However after 20 minutes the Dons extended their lead after good play involving Payne, Michie and Mackie, with Michie scoring to make it 2-0.
After this Celtic went back onto the offensive but the majority of the second half was end to end and the Dons ran out comfortable winners to ensure that the trophy came back to Pittodrie for the first time since 1986.
