THE YOUNG DONS seem to be improving with every game and with a home match next week against Dundee A completing our Reserve League Cup sectional programme after today's trip to Perth, the odds must be on the Pittodrie boys qualifying for the match-play stages. There's a great feeling of team spirit running through the ranks at the moment. They're helping each other, shouting more for the ball and, most important, listing to advice. George Murray has been a tremendous help in this respect. He can teach them by example.
I think the much-improved application to the game by the reserves was characterised in the last few seconds of the game earlier this week against Dundee United A. Almost immediately after putting the young Dons into a 3-0 lead, centre forward Willie Miller was back behind goalkeeper Andy Geoghegan, hanging on to the crossbar in an effort to prevent the visitors gaining a consolation goal. A season up in the Highland League has certainly provided valuable experience for young Miller and Andy Kerr who is doing a good job on the right flank, although mainly in a defensive role at the moment.
I was pleased to see Tommy Wilson coming back to the form which earned him a first-team place at the back end of last season. He tidied up efficiently at the back and gave solid support to Ian Hair who turned in another good display at centre half. Billy Williamson is another to keep his standard of performance on a high level and I thought that Ian Purdie worked well at inside forward against Dundee United A. He showed one flash of genius to flick the ball over a defender and fire in a shot which brought out a brilliant save from goalkeeper Sandy Davie.
