UNIVERSITY NARROWLY BEATEN
The two points gained last night at the expense of Aberdeen University at Pittodrie puts the Aberdeenshire and District League championship well within the grasp of Aberdeen A. It was only by the odd goal in three that the students were beaten, and though they were the inferior side on play, they came very near dividing the honours. The only score in the first half was a well-taken goal by Macdonald, who netted off a fine cross by Yule. Aberdeen had much the better of the exchanges, but the students, who were full of running, never gave up, and defended stubbornly. Late in the second period the University rallied, and in a scrimmage an Aberdeen defender gave away a penalty, off which D. R. Dugan scored at the second attempt, after Sutherland had stopped the spot kick. On the Aberdeen side Lees and Rankine changed places and following good play by Connon, Macdonald obtained the winning goal with a ball that found the net off his knee. The University, who were weakened early in the game by an injury to Allan, which necessitated his changing places with Stalker, put up fight to the finish, and in what was anything but a parlour game, on several occasions were near drawing level, even if the balance of play was always with Aberdeen. McBoyle. Lees, Wilson, Yule, Connon, and Rankine were outstanding for Aberdeen, and the best for the University were Mulligan, Dr Anderson, D. R. Dugan, Dr Dugan, Alexander, and Stalker.Source: Aberdeen Daily Journal 21st April 1921
