Ayr United 1 - 0 Aberdeen

Div 1 (Old)
Ayr United scorers: Waddell

30/09/1916 | KO:

Before about 3000 spectators, Ayr United on their own ground gained a narrow victory over Aberdeen. For the most part the United had the better part of the game, but Aberdeen put in a strong finish, and nearly managed to equalise. Waddell scored for the Ayr team.

Aberdeen had a rather strangely-arranged side at Ayr, and although it came off second best, they put up a good fight, and, with a little luck, might have divided the honours in the closing stages, even although playing against the wind. To begin with the united pressed, but Aberdeen settled down, and Ambler, getting away, almost scored. Ayr attacked strenuously, and a long shot by Waddell ultimately beat Anderson. Willie Wylie was the most troublesome of the Aberdeen forwards. After the resumption Mackay and Ambler had good tries. Both goalkeepers got plenty to do. Aberdeen's defence was very sound and as a pair Calder than Moir were more impressive than the Ayr backs.
