According to the match programme of 25th January 1947, Andrew had fulfilled a lifetime's ambition by signing for the Dons. He was a corporal in the R.E.M.E. awaiting demob when he signed.
Andy left Dundee when he chose to go part-time in order to join his brother in the business that they ran until they retired - Harry G. Smith Ltd, wholesale drapers. He played for Deveronvale and captained them to Qualifying Cup success in 1951, receiving a benefit match on 29th September 1952, against Celtic, when he was forced to retire from playing.
