After injury terminated Ian's playing career, he went into football management and had spells as manager of Carlisle United from 1970-1972 and Yeovil Town in 1984. Also acted as caretaker manager at Sunderland in 1976 and Leicester City in 1978. As assistant manager at Manchester City he won the English League Cup. In 2018/19 he was Honorary President of Dumbarton FC.
