On the 6th of May 1907 the Aberdeen Daily Journal reported that Gault had signed for West Ham and that there would be no fee involved because there was no transfer agreement with south of England clubs. A couple of days later, Aberdeen lodged a protest with the SFA that Gault, along with Wilfred Low, had been illegally approached by West Ham. The SFA undertook to forward the complaint to the EFA.
