Arrived at the Club on loan just in time to play in the semi-final of the League Cup and to help propel the Dons to their first success in nineteen years. Later joined up on a more permanent basis and quickly became a popular member of the squad. In July 2017, Shay signed a contract extension taking him through to the summer of 2020. On 21st May 2019 the contract was further extended to 2021 with the option of another year beyond that.
On 20th August 2020 Shay made a mark on the Club's history by, for the first time, becoming the fifth substitute used by the Dons in a competitive match.
On Monday 29th March 2021, it was announced that Shay was going on temporary loan to Heart of Midlothian. The press speculated that the move was preparatory to him signing a longer term deal at Tynecastle when his Aberdeen contract expired. The news brough a flood of good wishes to the enormously popular player who had made a fine contribution to the Dons under the management of Derek McInnes.
On 17th May 2021 the Club confirmed that Shay would not be offered a new contract. At the time of leaving, Shay was 31st on the all-time list of Dons' appearances, having taken the field in 294 competitive matches, scoring 15 goals.
On 27th July 2021, Cove Rangers announced that Shay had signed on at Balmoral Stadium for three seasons.
