After signing for the Dons, Willie was farmed back to Woodside until he would be needed at Pittodrie. On his return he proved to be an outstanding contributor at Reserve level.
During the Second World War, Willie was a prisoner of war in a German camp, but continued playing football there and was a prominent player in the camp teams, including in an "International" between Scotland and England where he scored two of Scotland's goals in a 5-0 vistory.
