Having begun season 2010/11 as captain of the Under-19s, Ryan was quickly elevated to the first team squad and ended up as a regular in the side, becoming a key player in the Derek McInnes revival of the Dons. The importance of the player to his manager was underlined when Ryan was appointed first team captain at the beginning of season 2015/16. Towards the end of his contract in 2017 Ryan indicated to the manager that he would be moving south of the border, but in the end he went to Glasgow instead.
